Johnny McDonald is a Philadelphia native, C.O.O. of Onion Flats LLC, Pennsylvania Licensed Realtor, Certified EcoAssociate by EcoBroker, Appointee to P.A.R.’s Presidential Advisory Committee on Climate Change, and a 2009 recipient of Philadelphia Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award.

In 2002, he joined his brothers’ Patrick and Timothy in their Development/Design/Build firm Onion Flats. Since then, Onion Flats has developed several sustainable residential communities, including the City of Phildelphia’s FIRST LEED-H Certified project and the FIRST LEED-H duplex in to receive PLATINUM Certification in the United States. Johnny’s responsibilities within Onion Flats include acquisition, finance, publicity, marketing, sales, & management.

In 2005, Onion Flats and childhood friend Howard Steinberg joined forces. The partnership also formed JIG Inc, a Construction Management & General Contracting firm, specializing in sustainability, green roofs, and solar installations. The partnership also formed Plumbob LLC, an AIA Architectural firm licensed in six states. These integrated disciplines allow the team to provide full & turnkey design/build services, both clients, and their own developments.

Looking to the future, Onion Flats has nearly 200 residences in development. Each project will attain the very strict requirements of LEED-H Certification.

Onion Flats’ mission is simple, build homes for people in the Philadelphia region to the highest sustainable standards and deliver to the market at a price comparable to a non LEED-H Certified homes.
